Background

Ammonia emissions are detrimental to the environment, climate and health. Around 95 % of german ammonia emissions come from agriculture. The use of ammonia-forming synthetic nitrogen fertilizers, especially urea fertilizers, is a significant source of ammonia, accounting for around 13 % of Germany's emissions (2018). In addition, ammonia losses after fertilization reduce nitrogen use efficiency of fertilization.

Germany has committed to reduce ammonia emissions by 29% by 2030 compared to 2005 (amended NEC Directive). Agriculture faces the challenge of launching targeted and efficient measures to reduce ammonia emissions.

In the joint research project NH3-Min, funded by the 'Landwirtschaftliche Rentenbank', we are investigating and evaluating measures to reduce ammonia emissions after application of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers in a nationalwide network of coordinated field trials.
